It depends on what you mean by psychic. Most people who are practicing psychics are unusually sensitive people, who have a gift for reading body language and clues that you might not even know you are displaying, even something like the way you are breathing, which can be sensed over the phone.
It's kind of like Sherlock Holmes, who could look at a person and say where they had been and what they had for breakfast, by telltale signs that most people wouldn't even notice.
Is that extra-sensory? I would say no... but I would grant that it is hyper-sensory, bordering on empathic, in understanding human nature, and gifted in inductive and deductive logic.
As far as telling the future... this is something that I can do myself... in fact, anyone can do to a certain extent. But that has to do with understanding present circumstances, and examining the most likely probable outcomes. This can be very accurate over the short term. Such as: if I turn on the light switch, the light will come on. This has only a very very small probability of being wrong. Depending on how perceptive the person is, and how much accurate information they have, predictions can be quite remarkable. However, it is still not foretelling, but only forecasting... like forcasting the weather... it deals in possibilities and probabilities. Some people are very gifted in doing this... reading people, estimating probabilities, and giving predictions... but is it psychic? Not really. Is it unusual? To do it well, I think you have to be unusually perceptive, have a very gifted inductive and deductive reasoning capability, and have accurate information regarding current circumstances. It may be that some "psychics" do this so naturally, that they don't even realize that this is what they are doing. When I do it, it's kind of like different scenarios playing out like movies in my head.
Then there are those who consider themselves mediums, who receive information from "spiritual beings". In my opinion that is purely demonic. People who allow themselves to have contact with demonic entities can be given information that they wouldn't otherwise have access to, and can, perhaps, make "supernatural" predictions. That is documented in the Bible, and so I allow for that possibility.
I stay away from people like that because I have no desire to consort with demons, or to receive counsel from one.
That being said:
Once when I was in Berlin (a long time ago), I was in a bar that I frequented near the post where I was stationed, and a man came in, looked around for a minute, then walked up to me, smiled, and asked me if this was an American club. He was a handsome young man, with a friendly face and Turkish appearance, which was not an uncommon minority in Berlin. As soon as he asked me, though, I knew immediately that he was a terrorist, and that the reason he wanted to know was because he (and his friends) were planning to blow up an American club. It was a terrifying thing to see, and I immediately told myself that I was being paranoid, and that my job had finally gotten to me. I diverted him, though, by telling him the owner was British (which was true), and he left before I could figure out a way to get some kind of ID. By the next morning I had completely convinced myself that it was just paranoia, and didn't speak about it to anyone. Two weeks later a bomb went off in an American club on the other side of town. About a dozen people were killed, I think, and dozens more injured. A Kurdish terrorist group claimed responsibility a few days later, and the US launched retaliatory strikes in to Libya.
I left the military after that, because of the guilt I felt for failing to report that... no matter how crazy it seemed.
So, was it just being sensitive to minute details? Or, was it God trying to tell me something in order to divert Evil? Was it hypersensory or supernatural, or a combination of both? I really don't know. But either way I didn't have enough faith in myself, or God, to act on it.
I think the only real failing that a person can have, is to not believe in God, and not believe that God can, and does, work in and through each of us, who are called by His name. I believe in God and in Christ Jesus, the Lord. I believe in His providence. I don't need or want a psychic to tell me what's going to happen, because if there is something I really need to know, I have faith that God will make sure that I know it.
The important thing is that if you see something that needs to be done, to have the courage to do it. The rest will take care of itself.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not upon your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your path straight."
That is as true today, as it was when it was written.

Scientific stories are carrying on with involving psychic competencies.. Both the USA and the previous Soviet Russia had been walking mystery systems throughout the bloodless warfare. The lame atheist common sense that a few have published on right here.. obviously indicates their lack of knowledge. Below is a hyperlink that lists paranormal study corporations

What would this world be like if there really psychic ability?
It has been argued that if psychic power existed, to use it would be "a gross and unethical violation of privacy" and "professions that involve deception would be worthless" There wouldn't be any need for undercover work or spies. Every child molester would be identified immediately. No double agent could ever get away with it. Psychics would be in demand for high paying jobs in banks, businesses and government. Most psychics would be very, very rich.... and since psychics are such altruistic persons, giving up their time to help others talk to the deceased or figure out what to do with their lives, they would be winning lotteries right and left and giving part of their winnings to help the needy. We wouldn't need trials of accused persons: psychics could tell us who is guilty and who is not. The polygraph would be a thing of the past. Of course, the operative word here is if. If psychic power existed the world would be very different.
No one has ever shown, under proper observing conditions, evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event.
Ever.
Really.
If they could it would be one of the greatest events in human history. At least a great as landing on the moon.

Some are real but most of them are fake. By the sounds of it though, the psychic you visited was real. Yesterday I watched 'Today Tonight' and there was this man who does voice-overs and he called up 10 different psychics and pretended to be a woman. They all fell for it and one of the psychics even said 'she' would get pregnant within the next 6 months. After the fake psychic said this, the man told her the truth-that he is a man doing a voice-over to see if psychics are real. Her reaction? "Uhh...Ohh..You got me there", before hanging up without another word.

Some are indeed real. I'd be more apt to claim that the ones you go see tend to be more real than ones on the telephone.
I've been to one that made predictions that came true, truly off the wall predictions. My mom saw a gypsy in the park, and she could hear bagpipes when talking to my mom, and asked if my mom had been to a funeral recently. My mom had, her grandfather had passed, and bagpipes played at his funeral. The gypsy went on to say that my mom had already met the man of her dreams, her soul mate. (I know, everyone hopes to hear that at a psychic reading) The gypsy told my mom that his name was James, and he would be her great love.
My mom thought about it, and was baffled. She didn't know anyone named James. She did have a crush on this guy named Randy. Things progressed between her and Randy, when one night, on a date, he told her that his first name was James. My mom and dad have been married for over thirty years now.
I do believe there are some real psychics out there, but there are probably more fakes than real ones. You never know though!

some are but I don't think it's that often an applicable skill.
we don't know how telepathy works or how to control it . So how would that make it a usable tool upon demand. maybe some day it might become valuable but I seriously doubt whether this will happen in this lifetime .A few may sometimes profit from it but their are drawbacks inherent that can make it much less desirable than vocal chords or the written word .

Most are fake, but there are some who are real.
But the real ones have to get the power from somewhere, and it's not good if you know what I mean.
That's not something you want to mess with.

You can bet your life they are.
When I was very young; I was so psychic it was scary.
I used to tell my guardians who was calling before they could answer the phone, and I had a 90+% hit rate.

there are many fakes, and a few true seers. when having something read, be very aware of people fishing. dont give them any answers to what is going on in your life, let them read, and see after the reading if it is true. this helps filter out the fakes.
they tend to ask fishing questions, and base their reading on the answer you give.
