A "major" is the student's primary course of study and a "minor" is a secondary course. In the U.S. university system, most students spend only about 1/3 to 1/2 of their program on their chosen subject matter. Most schools have "core" or "general education" requirements of all students, which they must complete in addition to their chosen course of study. Everyone has a "major", but a minor is usually voluntary.
