setting aside forced prostitution, if the peolpe who provide it are happy, straight honest businessmen and the customers are genuinely satisfied, Without looking at it in a religious sense, what exactly is the issue that isnt an issue already? I mean millions catch cancer from cigarettes every year right?

If its allowed to be viewed as a strict business, then who is anyone to judge a potential romantic partner for their day/evening job?

By legalizing, we are condoning it and allowing society to grow accustomed to it as an official practice. Women would only take pride in their job title.

How would you feel when your teenage son would rather not date real girls, but instead spends his allowance at the local street corner? How would you like your daughter get a summer job satisfying her brother? Its just a business, right?

I personally feel I have a right to know about and judge a potential sex/romance/marital partner for their choices in sexual partners. Its a matter of how they value something intimate.

Its not just prostitution, but I negatively judge any "sluut" the same. Sex isnt supposed to be handed out eagerly like candy. Whats the challenge, wheres the pursuit?

I dont care about the sex in and of itself... what I care about is a womans legitimate desires to give her body to me, and her desires for my body in turn.

Her willingness is meaningless to me if everyone else has had or could have her.

Imagine a womans who is obviously NOT satisfied with you in a sexual way... is that sexy to you? Do you get your cookies just the same when she doesnt even want yours?

Would her business policies require her not to have a disgusted look on her face during the act? I suppose she could hide it - they all do, right? At least she enjoys your money!

And you can tell your friends when youre bragging about your conquests about how much she enjoyed your money. I would assume pride in itself would detract you from prostitutes... but hey, if you got none...

We are men... Im not condoning promiscuity in any form... but we men enjoy chasing our women and winning them over.

How satisfied can you possibly be with a partner whose only an open receptical for money? Id rather jack off than give my seed up to trash. A good fantasy is more satisfying than a log of unheartfelt human flesh.

===

Oh my God. Im actually getting down thumbs? Are my fellow humans this jacked up?

I suppose anyone desperate would be forced to rely on a prostitute

==

I think that the only men who condone prostitution are the horney pigs that dont care about relationships... the ones who are obviously too stupid and small minded, instinctual, to care about the mind of the female.

And women who condone it are condoning this male attitude toward women.

Women who condone prostitution are only doing so because, probably, they want to be prostitutes themselves. Because its either their only chance to get laid or its their only means of feeling sexy and desirable, to be the sex object they want to be.

As most know, prostitution is one of, if not the oldest profession in civilized history. Historically, prostitution, while not recognized as a glorious or honorable profession, received a sort of passive acceptance. However, when turning to the tradition and ideals of the founders of this nation, it is quite easy to see that prostitution had no place in Early America. Considering that the majority of Americans today associate, or at least claim to associate, themselves with Christianity, it is not too hard to fathom that prostitution may be considered unethical. After all, the government, and the laws created thereby, are and have been intended to protect the public morals, health, wellfare, and safety of the citizens. Thus, when most people's morals lead them to visualize prostitution as a profession that is sinful, the profession or practice thereof is unethical. It might be worth examining the laws of your state, there are laws that prohibit polygamy, bigomy, and in some cases adultery. We regulate sex everyday by preventing an 18 year old from having sex with a 15 year old. Also, strip clubs and adult stores must make sure to purchase and establish themselves in locations zoned by the communities telling when and where they can function. Further, many states and local ordinances regulate the conduct and activities that may be conducted within those establishments. Prostitution is not ethical because it disagrees with the closely held moral values of most Americans. While the consenting adults argument is worthy of some consideration, it certainly does not outweigh the other concepts and precepts herein described. Further, if I have some illicit drug and my friend and I, consenting adults, want to partake in the experience of consuming that drug, promising not to leave and endanger others, should I be able to do so?

Right millions of people who smoke do die from cancer. But smoking is considered a disease.

Prostitution, spreads disease.

That is not the only reason, if you believe as you do nothing I will say will convince you otherwise. Neither will any of the other answers that you get here on y/a from other people that believe it is an ethical question

Truth to tell this question could also have been posted in the health category also.

Have a good one.

I can't stand people like Cogito who think their opinion is all that matters or that society's morality should dictate that prostitution is criminal. Who cares why someone wants to have sex with a prostitute? Who are you to say that consenting adults can't have sex just because money is being passed? In Nevada where prostitution is legal the prostitutes have regular exams to prevent the spread of STDs unlike where it's illegal. Face it, there's a segment of society who would remain virgins and act out their sexual repression in sick ways ( look at priests for example) if it weren't for prostitution. And before anyone tries to make this personal I have a healthy sex life and I do not go to prostitutes but I know some people who like that and I'm OK with that - so stop being so judgmental and legalize it already!

ADD: All of these people that think prostitution spreads so many diseases need to realize that this only happens in the places that it is ILLEGAL! Look at Nevada, Miss Lockwood - the businesses there thrive because it is regulated and in locations that are remote from schools, etc unlike ILLEGAL prostitution which is all over!

Debi: Prostitution will NEVER go away just because some people would like to pretend it doesn't exist simply because it's "bad". When it's legalized, however, it can be regulated and incidences of STDs, unwanted pregs, etc. can be mitigated and the sex workers can be treated like people. The argument that otherwise faithful men are going to suddenly start frequenting cathouses just because they are legal doesn't hold water. If they are unfaithful it points to bigger problems than just because prostitution is legal - don't blame prostitutes that a husband cheats. Also, why do you feel you should decide what anyone else does - God gave people free will - why do you feel it necessary to take it away. If no one gets hurt let people do what they want.

Gee - Maybe it's an ethical question because it's about ethics.

Prostitution is an ancient tradition among almost all cultures. It has been both praised and vilified over the millennia. A significant factor in stopping prostitution is the development and spread of venereal diseases. Irresponsible sexual activity is a common way of spreading a variety of diseases. Controlling prostitution is one way of trying to control the disease.

... and thousands die every year from car crashes. Should we stop putting up STOP signs?

You compared it with cigarettes...fine, that is like comparing apples and oranges...but, I will address this from what you stated:

Smoking has many, many laws surrounding it... smoking in public places is being banned in state after state...

Why? Because it is not only harmful to the smoker...but, irritates and harms those around him/her.

Prostitution is a vehicle that spreads other pretty bad things...
Unwanted pregnancies - often resulting in abortions
Adultery
Pornagraphy
STDs
An inability for people to have healthy sexual relationships...

Not to mention... when people go to prostitutes they are often smoking, drinking, and gambling...getting themselves involved in dangerous situations and unhealthy habits.

To legitimize the business would allow them to set up shop next to public schools, parks, in downtown areas... shall we start putting cigarette machines in our school? Boy...that would go over really GREAT!

Come on... even without the religious aspect to it...which is very important... there are many other reasons why it is not wise. The fact is...that is what makes it a religious issue from the start... because it is bad for people. Get it? God made laws to protect people, not harm them or make life boring. Did you ever notice...God did not set up the 10 commandments until Moses' day... Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph... who were righteous men before God... never saw the ten commandments. They messed up about some things...hurt themselves and other people. It is pretty clear that is part of the reason God gave us rules and guidelines to follow. Abraham lied to people, and it hurt his wife. Isaac picked favorites with his children. Jacob married two women, and had children through them...and, their concubines. Joseph bragged about his visions. Samson...he lived with a high paid prostitute...legal in the land of the Philistines...look what it got him... she tricked him into giving away the secret of his strength. He was blinded and beaten because of it. Lovely...

Rules are needed to keep peace. So that people do not take advantage of each other. Adultery... is wrong. It destroys marriages, and families.

I am not at all interested in a house of prostitution publicized like a bottle of soda pop. Thanks, but NO THANKS! It is bad enough to see "gentleman's clubs" and "dating service" ads...when we all KNOW that they use these words to disguise a venue of prostitution.

You have not thought this all the way through...

Tom Cat: Even in places where it is legal... the issues I mentioned earlier...with pregnancy, STDs, abortion, etcetera... those things still occur in those situations regardless of whether or not the personnel get regular exams or not. It is still detrimental to marriages and families... legalized or not. Illicit sex outside of a monogamous relationship...can and is harmful. It is obviously your CHOICE what you will do... but, do not sit there and try to tell ME otherwise. I can see what is going on... and I am well aware of what Nevada does... that does not make it ethical, moral, healthy, or advisable.

It's immoral and socially unacceptable as it contributes to incurable diseases, divorce, violence and reduces property values.
There are legal whorehouses in most countries and swingers clubs where intimacy takes place on the property (legally) or the connection is made and then the action takes place at another venue. What is illegal is streetwalking and being a crack whore or pimp however personally I think the whorehouses should be shut down as well. IMHO

You have a very idealized sense of prostitution. The people who provide it are not happy, they are forced to do it by sheer poverty.

It's the oldest game in the books besides politics and you can't make politics illegal so I guess prostitution got the nod.

Because it involves sex. Many people consider sexual behavior to be a matter of ethics and morals that should be regulated and controlled for the greater good of society.

P.S. I think it should be legal.
