Upgrade your PSU.

250 is very, very weak.

Go with a minimum of 400 Watts.

However, and I must emphasize this. Take your case off and measure how much space you have available horizontally behind the PSU.

Manufactured computers don't leave much space, to keep the case smaller.

I bought a 500 Watt PSU, and it wouldn't fit in my Sony Vaio.

It stuck out too far, and hit the back of the CD and DVD players.

So measure that distance, then check the specifications of whatever PSU you buy first, to make sure it will fit. And you have to give it at least an extra half or three-quarters of an inch minimum for the power wires to come out the back, as well.

Possibly, chances are that it would operate normally until you try to run a 3D app, when that happens, most cards will up their core and memory speeds, thus drawing more power. In the event that there inadequate amounts of power, usually the computer will just turn off. But if you're unlucky there may be significant damage to the mobo. With that said, there quite a bit of fudge factor when dealing with PSU's. If you have a good high quality PSU, you may be able to get away with it. But if you have some cheap generic PSU that came with your case. Then you might have problems.

First, if new video card works as is then just leave it (dont add anymore cards, disks or USB powered stuff to the PC though!) The switching power supply should just 'crowbar' (ie shutdown without burning up) if a supply line (like +5v) is overloaded...
That 300w min seems awfully high, what make/model is it? Must be the 'Mother of all video cards'
If you're patient, you can pick up a 400w used supply for $30-40, just make sure the connector type matches the motherboard (probably ATX style)

Upgrade your PSU to a 400W- that's the best option. But until then, yeah go back to your old video card.
