1. May be burnt mother-board because of over heating.
2. Check for the RAM, if tis working.
3. Check for the power cabled to the board
4. May be problem with the VGA card.
5. May be there is some earthing when you MB touches any conductor.

Along with the other answers already given probably one of the most likely causes is a power surge or brown out on your AC line during operation. If the power company that serves you has many a UPS is a must. This type of failure eats monitors and printers also.

if you are using your PC during rainy days, your online and then there was a lightning struck and hit your telephone grounded line, chances are that your motherboard will become defective because of the sudden destruction of lightning in your telephone line and it is proven because i experience the situation wherein the motherboard of my PC was made unusable same also with the hardisk.

Same as Bull lightning strike but I had a video card fried back then; power supply problem is more likely to happen. Battery loss won't stop a board from working.
