If you're talking about a plate for food, it's because originally they were hand made by potters using a potters wheel. It's actually very difficult to hand make something that's symmetrical without using a wheel, so plates, bowls, jugs, etc, are all based on a round shape. Nowadays, most of the commercially made pottery is done using a mould, so more complex shapes are practical.
If you're talking about a baseball pitcher's plate, I don't know. An American may know something about the origins of the game and give some insight into this.

Bowls were made first, and they were round, because all the food would stay in the middle properly.
Plates are round because they copied the same design!
