When mailing a U.S. Coin (dated after 1964), would wrapping it in newspaper (for padding/packaging) damage the Coin when mailing to another person?

I would appreciate knowledgeable answers. Thank you.

For common and circulated coins should be fine, but I wouldn't use newspaper on good or mint coins. Although the duration of delivery is too short for paper products to have any adverse effects on the coin, the newspaper ink could be transferred to the coin's surface during wrapping and not only will it be difficult to remove but in long term could be harmful to a coin's surface. The black ink consists of petroleum products like carbon black, and also contain additives like waxes, surface active and drying agents. Better alternative is to use plain paper to wrap each coin, then secure the wrapped coins on a paperboard with a tape before using another board to cover. This is how I would normally wrap my coins to be sent abroad and without any complaints so far. The better coins you could use a 2x2 or flip.

Since coin dealers prefer coin sleeves (with a plastic wrap type material in the center of the circluar cut-out), I would assume that plastic would be the answer. Put it in a ziplock baggie, fold it up, tape it into a square and mail it. I've done this twice mailing gold coins with complete success. On a side note, 30 years ago, an Ietaewon mamma-san came running up to me in a panic. She asked me if the $50 bill she had been given was real. It was one of those "play money" Confederate notes they used to sell in thick packets for a buck when I was 6 or 7 years old. They look like real Confederate currency, except for the mint condition of the paper and the word "facimile" printed very tiny on the reverse of the note. Me and two buddies helped her stop the cheat before he left the building. I still have the note to this day.

Newspaper is not a good idea, for it not only has ink, but the paper itself has acids in it. If someone you know does scrap-booking or greeting card making, they use non acid paper, ask them for a sheet. A piece of good stationary would also do for a short time. Newspaper is about the worse thing to use to wrap anything of value.
