My Father in law has been divorced for the last three years, and in the mean time he has failed to clean his house. His bathroom is disgusting, its so bad that when we go to visit him I refuse to shower there. He also has a cat that is allowed on all of the furniture so there is cat hair everywhere. Total disaster. Would it be rude of me to clean it and if not what is the best way to get soaked in for three years mold and soap scum in the bathroom? I really need help on this one.

i dont know that your father in law is as big a pig as he is probably depressed. get a steam cleaner and you will be able to clean the mess with just water. polish the fixtures with a paste made of baking soda with water.... vaccume the furniture with the fabric brush attachment. and thanks for helping him....

Some men just don't know how to clean (they weren't taught, or are just lazy, or something)..
One thing, sense the divorce, has he seemed to be depressed? How long has it been since he had a physical? Depression can cause housework to slide downhill-and quickly.
Please, have him see his dr., and maybe a counselor. And yes, please offer and do, clean up his house.
Bring your vacuum, a couple of clean bags to change in your vacuum, a bucket, broom, dust pan, mop, cleanser, bleach, vinegar, scrup brush, windex, rags, elbow grease. And trash bags.
Please, don't hold it against the cat to get on the furniture. I allow my cat on mine. Just vacuum the hair off the furniture. Or use a lint brush for that job.
As for the shower, you can pour bleach in on the floor of the tub, let it soak for 10 min. then rinse well. As for the soap scum, vinegar or windex would be good, Or cleanser with scrub brush. Or, try scrub free. That is a pretty good product. Get it with bleach in it. Wash the shower curtain with bath towels to help scrub the shower curtain and rubber bath mat (if there is one) in the washer. Have fun dusting, vacuuming, decluttering, etc. It needs to be done. Is there any way your husband could help? Does the lawn need to be mowed? Weeds pulled? Maybe hire some young teens (a couple of them) that you know and trust, and get some help out there, with the cleaning inside and outside.
Take care.

If he's wallowing in his misery you won't be able to change his behavior, he'll have to do that himself. As far as the house cleaning, do get his permission if he's a really private person. It might just be with the money to have a cleaning crew (Merry Maids or similar?) come and do the dirty work. They know what products to use, and will get it done right the first time! Then, perhaps, a weekly or biweekly visit and just an hour's work can keep it livable! Good luck!

Your husband needs to realize that the place is just disgusting to you and back you up. Dad doesn't have to know, but husband does. There are several options: stay in a hotel, even if it's an hour away; only make day-trips; tell Dad you're more comfortable with him visiting you, rather than the other way around. Dad doesn't seem to mind the surroundings, but I surely would. And be careful about the dishes. I bet he doesn't bother with the dishwasher. He needs a housekeeper, but how to introduce that politely? Idk.

Well I don't think it's your job.Why do you go there?I would refuse. You can't really help a pig, if it doesn't want to help itself. You should tell him to get a cleaning lady.

If it's that bad, stay at a reasonable motel or hotel and not stay there at his house at all.
