Can you list an official state site that has the requirements? That would be most helpful. I have about 4 years experience, but in different aspects of the trade (installation, panel building, maintenance). All industrial, none residential.

I live in California, but most states are similar. You probably need 4-6 years of experience (technical college can count for some of it), 3-4 reference to vouch for you, and you need to pass a couple of tests which actually have more to do with running a business honestly than with electrical knowledge. Look in the phone book for your state department of Consumer affairs and call them to get the specific requirements.
