the universe existed before the big bang. the big bang is just the common era of the whole universe. also the bible does not prove of a god creating the universe, it just suggests. there is no proof. and i believe you are looking for a more scientifical response, however the answer is not known by anyone.. we all wonder this question.

Have you read Isaac Asimov??? He has a very good book that gives a nice idea about how the universes is always present, and yet it is constant creation. When the universe ceases to expand because of lack of energy, it begins to contract, and it becomes very small, harnessing all the energy, and again a big bang takes place.

people the question was how it happened, not who did it. anyway i am not so sure that it happened. what's to explain? perhaps the universe has always existed in one form or another, although clearly the big bang shook things up a lot.
