I'm sure some people like pencils because they can erase whatever they write. Funny story here: Once in high school I took a business class and my best friend sat right beside me. Our teacher (male) used to give us pop quizzes and then we would trade them with other students to grade them. Sometimes he would collect them as soon as the grading was done but this particular day he didn't so I started writing a note on the back of my quiz to my friend. I wrote: I hate this class, he talks to us like we are 1st graders, these quizzes are so stupid. She wrote back and said Yeah! me too! Well, he must have seen us doing this so when the bell rang he said OK everyone pass your quizzes to the front of the class. YIKES! I started to erase mine and he said "Oh No! if you didn't want me to see what you were writing you shouldn't have wrote it" so I was forced to hand it in with that note on the back. My friend and I were freaking out. During the 8th period (last one of the day) we were starting to relax when over the loud speaker the principal called our names and said "report to the office." So we went to the office and there stood the business teacher all smug and irritated and told us that we had to serve detention every day for one hour after school and that we needed to bring with us the wide lined paper and the fat pencils that the 1st graders used. And for one hour every day we had to write our ABC's and 123's with them. I thought he was an *** at the time but looking back on it it's pretty funny and I sure didn't write notes in that class again. My parents wanted to kill me but instead made me walk the 4 miles home every night after the detention (they said they weren't spending hard earned gas money for my idiot behavior.) My friend and I still laugh about this to this day. So, I guess we want to hide our mistakes by using pencil that we can erase.

personally, I like the look of graphite over ink..also, I like the different tone variations that I achieve with a pencil...and being able to erase occasionally isn't a bad feature at all..lol

If you're refering to drawings then I believe it's because you can create more texture and shadings with a pencil than with a pen.

If you're referring to drawing, than because you can create a whole bunch of different textures, and you can shade and eases the shading too.
But if you're talking abaout just in general, i know i prefer them because 1. you can erase (duh)
nd 2. because once you start writing with them and you wera the lead down, it starts forming and angle and a slant that feels better to me, and more 'relaxed?' ... or more natural because it's broken in.

Because with pencils I can press lightly or harder to get different results, with ink that is a lot more difficult to do.

You can do really cool things with the eraser, like stick them in your nose!
