My computer hasn't got much space left and i have an external hard drive with heaps of room left.
My question is, is it possible to install a game to my external hard drive and play it off that?

Maybe. Most software asks you for a directory in which to install the software. BUT, also makes entries in the system registry. This means that it will work on the external drive only attached to the original system; it will not be portable to a different system. They do this to prevent piracy, so that you can't install it on a CDROM and then make a zillion copies of the CDROM.

When you install a program, it always asks you where you would like to install the program.

So yes, it should work.
