Like the last answerer I have traveled alone often, and I am a female too.
In London you can use the YHA hostels, I liked the Holland house in Holland park, but it has been many years since I was there. Just go to their websites and see if they have private rooms:
http://www.londonnet.co.uk/ln/guide/accomm/budget_yha.html
seems to have links for all.
In Paris I have used:
http://www.mije.com/index_individuels_uk.asp
Their hostels are in the Marais, a nice part of town, just north of the Notre Dame, walking distance from the Louvre.

If you choose not to have a private room (costly), take a pack or suitcase you can lock and an extra padlock, as there are lockers in most places.
All hostels and most hotels in both Paris and London have security on the doors at all times. In fact, all town hostels in Europe do.

The answers so far have been ridiculous! There is nothing wrong with a female travelling on her own I have done it numerous times and stayed in hostels all along. Paris doesn't have any great hostels but you can't go wrong with 3 ducks or find a very cheap hotel that is like 1 star to stay in. I would try hotel de la herse d'or in paris. I never stayed in a hostel in London as it was very expensive but my brother atayed at the st christopher's inn and he said it was FINE. Good luck.....

Don't go to that one where the people were murdered. I saw 2 documentaries about it. One was where guys were murdered and the other women were murdered. The hostel turned out to be a place where people pay money to kill and torture people. I hope every criminal is found!

I doubt that there are any that are safe for a female on her own. Do some research online and see what you come up with. I would advise that you travel with someone. Not only is it safer, but it will give you someone to share your experiences with.
