Gandhi, Nehru, and Jinnah & Mountbatten the four pillars of India's partition in two counties India & Pakistan. Each played their role in this split & no denial for this fact.

Jinnah wanted a separate homeland for the Muslims at the instigation of the British rulers. Gandhi wanted an united India even if that meant Jinnah was to become the Prime Minister of the independent country. Jawaharlal Nehru's ambition to become the Prime Minister stood in the way. Nehru negotiated with the British for a quick partition of India whereby he became the Prime Minister of India and Jinnah the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Indians. Jinnah knew that muslims were in power of "Mughal Empire" and that after creation of 'India', muslims will no longer be in the dominant position. That is why, Jinnah pushed and succeeded in obtaining Pakistan.
Pakistan and India did not split. Pakistan was NEVER a part of India. There was no such thing called India before 1947. Before 1947, India and Pakistan were part of empire called Mughal Empire and before that, they as whole, or their parts belonged to different empires/civilizations in different points of time.
All this crap about Pakistan being part of India or India being a big brother is totally false and is a propaganda to rewrite the history.

Dear friend,
You cant blame the responsiblity over any one person, reason it was an atmosphere created by the British, which we could realise now.
The person who mislead this nation was Mr Nehru, He betrayed Mahatma Gandhi, tried to nutralise Mr Jeena and was very selfish at this hour of time. Indian historians could not write all the stuff reason being they would have been pounded by the congress leaders and goons.
All politicians looted this nation like thugs after indipendence, reason what ever they did no one was there to question them.
I belive that the ignorance of normal indians, lack of education and poverty were the most important factors responsible for creating the factor favourable to Mr Nehru, who openly sidelined Mr Gandhi, to crunch the power and hold the nation to ransom.
If you read the 1962 Indo china war, here too its the same person who went to srilanka on visit and decleared that he had send Indian soldiers to Indo tibet border to throw away the chinese soldiers intruding in indian teritory. Result you know. Except Indira Gandhi, this family had been burden to this nation.

i agree with all the answers given above but what nobody wrote about is that we as indians are so much divided on the basis of religion, caste, colour, sex Etc. And at the time of independance hinduism and islam were two most important religions in our country, and it was a big distinction, islamists feared about their future as india was moving towards democracy and mjority of indians being hindus they thought they would have got suffered.
and we can still see this feeling in an independent india even after 60 years, communal riots, babri masjid incident, godhra kand, guruvayur temple issue, dera sachha sauda, We as indians love to fight over religion. So, the then islamists who had this view moved for a separate nation.

Requesting a 100 word essay for school misses one of the most interesting chunks of world history in modern times.
I highly recommend you read:
"Freedom at Midnight"
When the British Raj ended in India, that nation had two deep religious divisions with two divergent needs for their respective peoples.
The book I recommend above gives a very good account of the leaders of all factions, the intense negotiations trying to reach and agreement which resulted in dividing the India as a compromise, and the violence that took place during the transition period of moving mass segments of the population to their respective assigned land.

The behaviour of fanatics both in Hindu and Muslim communities created an unsafe feeling which was duly fanned by Mr.Jinnah. On the Indian side the decision making power was not with Vallabhai Patel in this specific issue.Otherwise even with Mr.Jinnah India might not have been spilt.

Ever heard of the policy Of divide & rule, the British rulers divided Hindus & Muslims because if they were United they could have thrown them back, they divided us long back and Muslims demanded a separate country & Gandhi Agreed to it. that's why India & Pakistan are 2 diff countries now and are still fighting with each other !! Stupid Indians and Stupid Pakistanis , if they stood united, Pakistan would have been a part of India, & India would have got independence long ago
