No one should be laughing, because everyone has been there at one point or another. Computer people anyway. You should not feel that way at all. If you want to highlight everything on the page, all you do is press the control key, which is located at the bottom left of your keyboard and the letter A at the same time. If you want to highlight one word or a sentence or a paragraph or something, all you have to do is run your mouse over it as you are pressing your left mouse button. Traditionally, your mouse has a button on the left of it and on the right of it.
I really hope that helped, and remember, all of us were beginners at one time, so there's no point in being embarrased.

The most common way is to place your mouse at the the beginning or end of the text you wish to copy. Press the left mouse button and drag to the other end befor releasing.

In a text editing program you can also position the caret at the beginnning or end of the text and hold down the shift key as you press the arrow keys to move the caret and select everything from the starting position to the ending position.

if you're talking about highlighting texts in a document file just left click the start of text you want to highlight, hold the mouse button, drag the mouse to the end of the text you want to copy then let go of the mouse button. then you can right click on the highlighted lines and then select copy.

if you're taking about files, just click the file, hold the ctrl key then select other files you want to highlight. you can also use shift key if you want to highlight adjacent files.

by the way, the shift key also works with text in documents. just click the start of the text you want to highlight, hold the shift key then click the end of the text and let go of the shift key..
