First, subtract 1/4 from 7/8 to see what fraction of the tank was taken up by the 15 gallons of gas:

7/8 - 1/4 = 7/8 - 2/8 = 5/8 = 0.625

So, 0.625 * x = 15, where x is the capacity of the tank:

0.625 * x = 15
x = 24 gallons

Let x be the gallon capacity of the gas tank.
Balance by the difference,
15 gal = (7/8 - 1/4)x = (5/8) x
x = 3*8 = 24 gal

C=capacity of tank
(1/4) C + 15 = (7/8) C
(2/8) C + 15 = (7/8) C
15 = (5/8) C
C= 15 (8/5) = 24 gallons

1/4x+15=7/8x
2/8x+15 = 7/8x

15 = 5/8x

15*8/5=x

3*8=x

24=x

the tank has 24 gallons
