Place Cream of Wheat where the ants can access it. After eating it, the cereal expands and the ants will explode.
Dust food-grade diatomaceous earth along the ant’s pathways. The white powder will cut through their exoskeleton and they will dehydrate and die.
Vinegar poured on the ant pile is said to work.
Some people use grated citrus rinds because orange oil is used against red ants.
Red chili powder repels ants, & some say cinnamon works.
Plant mint around the foundation & areas you don't want ants in (if you don't need it for a garden) & landscape with Cedar mulch. It would be effective & decorative too.
Mix borax with sugar water. Place it on the ant trails and where the ants are coming in. Or just combine equal parts powdered sugar and borax. Sprinkle where they crawl. Be careful... Boric acid is a soil sterilant and should never be placed on soils where plants are growing or that may be used for growing plants in the future. Make baits with Borax & peanut butter & honey (1 teasp of boric acid per cup of the food bait). You can put it in small plastic margarine containers with holes punched in the side toward the bottom.
Make a solution of equal parts orange oil, compost tea and molasses. Pour the mixture directly into the hole of a fire ant mound. Orange oil is effective at destroying the protective shell of fire ants. Compost tea contains microorganisms that feed on fire ants. Molasses is a food source for the microorganisms in compost tea. Molasses helps to increase the number of predatory microorganisms in a fire ant mound.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

Amdro.......available at the nurseries as home stores. The poison is taken and fed to the queen.
Another option is to mix boric acid with peanutbutter, but it in a jar with a few small holes for the ants to enter. Tape the jar or glue it so dogs or kids can't open it. Put the poison jars near the ants but in shade least the peanutbutter melt and turn rancid quicker.

Bah- don't listen to the people saying go to Home Depot / Lowes. They're just gonna tell you to dump a bunch of toxic, harmful chemicals on your lawn. Kills the ants, but they're also toxic Fido and the kidlets!
Try all the natural solutions suggested first (orange oil, borax, vinegar, etc). If those don't work, go with an organic pesticide (like this one: http://www.garden-ville.com/garden-ville_organic_insecticide.htm)
Good luck!

Go to home depot or lowe's and ask someone in lawn and garden and tell them what you need. They will suggest the best. They are informational, because that is their job to know.
