In particular, I'm thinking of China, Australia, and much of the Middle East, though there are many other countries that censor the Internet. Why do the people in those countries tolerate it? How can a government get away with 1984esque tactics?

most care more about what you might learn that they don't want you to know, to allow unfetterred internet access.

becasue they use barbaric forms of goverment, and they dont want their ppl smart enough to find out wats going on around the owrld

dont make the mistake of assuming they dont want to do the same thing in the states ... theyve tried to tie bills with "thought crime" legislation onto several things and i think theres one rolling around even now ...
