you need an internal hard drive as a slave or as the only one if your ok with losing all your stuff and reinstalling your operating system. tigerdirect.com is also a good site.

Your question is kind of ambiguous in that i am not sure if you mean hard drive space or RAM.
Film editing takes a lot of hard drive space and RAM.
If your dell is going slow while you are editing you may need RAM
If you are running out of space to store the films on your computer then you need a hard drive.
If you need ram there are a couple of things you need to know before you can get the right amount and type. There are a few different types that your computer could support, you need to check you manual to see exactly what type you need. Also, there is a maximum amount of RAM you can install that is determined by what you motherboard can handle. That too should be in your manual.
If you need a hard drive there are a few options depending on your situation. If you have a laptop then most likely the only way to increase space is to swap out your old hard drive for a new one. With film editing, the faster the drive the better, common speeds are 4200rpm and 5400rpm. If you have a desktop then you do not need to swap out drives, you can add a drive to your current setup as long as you have the available space. Again faster speed is better for desktop drives.

Well a hard drive is the part of your computer that stores all your information and that would be the part you need to change.
However how much space you need is something you have to decide next. A good starting point would be is to find out how big your existing hard drive is. you can do this by going to my computer then right click on Local Disk C:. There look for capacity and it will show something like 67 GB (GB stands for GigaBytes)
Now if your filling up your hard drive quickly I would look for a harddrive with a number probably around 3-4 times that number (Ex... so if the capacity is 67 GB look for a harddrive with 200 GB or more)
some other things you should pay attention to is whether the hard drive your getting is SATA or IDE, the rpm speed and how big the cache is. I would recommend a getting IDE(also know as ATA-133, PATA), 7200 rpm and getting a hard drive with at least 8 mb cache

What you mean is more system RAM resources so that your programs will run faster or you want more hard drive real estate so you can store more data? From your question I read that you are running out of hard drive space so in effect you got three choices. Add an extra hard drive to your desktop by purchasing a new hard drive and instal it into the computer case. Secondly, you can buy an external harddrive by putting in a external case and connecting it by USB or firewire. Thirdly, you can add a thumb drive (some are 4gb) so you can have extra space. Or lastly, you can burn some data on dvd's to free up space. If I am reading your question right, memory is different in that you add memory modules to your motherboard. If your's is a DELL, most likely you will need to purchase it from DELL directly and install it yourself. Very easy, but first check how many memory slots on your motherboard either by opening the case or ring up DELL and quote your PC details. Don't confuse the issue between memory and 'running out of space' on your PC. You can't run out of memory, the PC will swap between your hard drive and ram when it is low on memory maybe due to many applications opened, and this file swap reduces performance.

You must find out exactly what type of memory you currently have and what kind of information your computer can support.
When you replace memory it has to be the same size, the same type, and the same speed. Now DDR2 memory has come out making it incompatible with DDR memory.
Frankly, the best way to handle this is to talk with Dell. Once you give them the specifications and the model number of the computer they can tell you what memory you can use, and they can sell it to you. You won't get the absolute bottom price, but it will be a fair one. More importantly it will be the RIGHT one or Dell will make it right. For that alone it is worth dealing with Dell.

^^^^shes talking about SPACE not RAM, jackass.....What you need is a rather fast internal hard drive to downlod file onto your pc quickly so you need a large cache. I think the best are 16mb or so.... also for lots of raw footage get a hard drive that holds 500 Gigs or more. Get a book from the library on how to put it in or get Geek Squad or a similar service to help. This isn't neccesary but forbest quality playack and speed get some extra RAM.

you need to see if you can find the configuration of your pc on the dell website, to see what kind of ram you have. There's also free software programs that will tell you everything about your computer. The one I have is ' Mypcinfo" The ram has to match what you have in your computer. Like ddim with ddim..When you get the results from Mypcinfo. It will tell you what kind of ram and how much ram is in each slot. My notebook says ddim slot 1 256 Then in slot two it's also 256 which comes out to 512 of ram. So If I wanted to put more, I'd need to put one 512 ddim in slot one and one 512 ddim in slot two, which makes 1gig of ram. They have to be matched,
512 and 512 not 256 and 512
