I'm 39 weeks 4 days pregnant ... and I've been having mild (very mild) menstrual like cramps for the past 2 days .. pretty much non-stop. They are just kind of there .. I wouldn't consider them painful .. just bothersome.
I've been 1cm dilated for the past 2 weeks .. how painful do these contractions have to get for me to know that my cervix is dilating more??
it's my first baby :)
thanks!

I don't know if the severity of the pain matters, but I know for my cervix to start dilating it was the worst pain I've EVER felt in my life.

It isn't the pain level it is the intensity of the contractions that do the dilating. With my first I was barely in any pain and I was 6 dilated and only went to the hospital because my husband made me because the amount I was bleeding (it was just the plug) scared him.

With my second they were much more painful and it took a while to dilated.

When your contractions are REGULAR whether it is 10 or 5 minutes apart is when you should call your doctor. I had contractions for 4 hrs with my second but because they jumped from 5-2-7 minutes apart with no pattern they told me to stay home until they were regular. They were right.

Good luck and congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The severity of the pain doesn't really affect dilation. Some people don't have much pain at all. You should let your doc know about the cramps though. That's how my labor started out...felt like menstrual cramps. My longest was 6 hours so be careful.

The severity of the contractions have nothing to do with how much the cervix is dilating.

you don't need to have painful contractions. get up and walk around and let gravity take control. when you dilate, it feels like a slight groin pull in the middle of your stomach between the vagina and the belly button, but internally of course. you can be 4 cm dilated with no cramping or contractions.

For me the contractions were very, very strong. The mild ones did nothing as I entered the hospital at 2 cm dilated and was like "oh, this hurts". The big whoppers are the ones that made me dilate and man were they whoppers, they made me groan "AAARRRRGGGHHHH". My midwife knew that I wasn't progressing when she came into my hospital room and I was still looking good (hair still in place, was able to smile pleasantly). It was when I was dishelved looking and saying unpretty things that she knew I was dilating.

Good luck!
