Not everybody wraps themselves in a flag and a bible. The following quote defines some peoples' views of patriotism. What's so difficult to understand about this? I wonder what people are hiding when they wrap themselves in the flag.

"Our country is not the only thing to which we owe our allegiance. It is also owed to justice and to humanity. Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong. "

~James Bryce

You are absolutely correct - not all people wrap themselves in a flag and a Bible - not even all conservatives.

Patriotism, in my opinion, is striving for what's best for the country, and, hence, what's best for the citizens.
Most of the time, the best solutions are not found on the left or right, but nearer the middle. Far left and far right rhetoric are both usually off the chart as far as logic and common sense are concerned and seldom provide any real solutions to the concerns facing our nation.
The Michael Moore's and Ann Coulter's often bring up legitimate concerns - but seldom have any realistic solutions.
It's always easier to criticize than to find real solutions - and the true patriots are the ones looking for the real solutions, regardless of their political affilliation.

Because some people find so many reasons to be negative about America and don't show much pride in being an American. That comment about what people are hiding when they wrap themselves in a flag makes no sense to me. It is this type of remark, that makes me wonder where they are coming from. We are even made fun of because we value the flag as a symbol of our freedom. It's always some kind of put down. It's so negative.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

-- Theodore Roosevelt

I am not saying all but many Conservatives seem to also consider patriotism as agreeing, standing by and never questioning our government at all times. Even if they say they do not their actions seem to show it. Liberals on the other hand question seem to question the government too much, well at least in the eyes of the consevatives, and this must mean they are "unpatriotic." Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most wise a honorable presidents...his words are true.

Because the definition that is put forward is a lie based on a quote that is not a quote.

How would Edwards put it?? AHH Yes... It is only a bumper sticker. There is no war on terror.

Very Patriotic ? Or incredibly stupid and ignorant of world affairs?

I'm truly amazed by your schizophrenic interpretation of the logic in that statement. Righteousness is the province of Biblical teachings. The Flag is the symbol of strength and unity. Justice and humanity flow from the sure knowledge of right and wrong. Biblical teachings show those ways. I see all good and righteousness in doing both. I see nothing at all wrong with doing either. This is quite a diabolically cleaver lie ... Oh yeah. I see the father of all lies at work here.

I love my country, and will criticize it's policies if I think they are wrong. If wanting our troops home safe and sound and not fighting and dying in a war that should have never been fought in the first place, makes me unpatriotic then so be it. Dissent is a form of patriotism, and blind following is just plain scary.

patriotism, in itself is loyalty to the nation. Even though you may not agree with every decision made you remain loyal
this really works with the democratic, republic (which we are) types of govt where freedom is in existence
besides you want to be labeled patriotic when u really want to follow a "global" community crap foolishness

Not all conservatives are that way, but some on here are. I just got railed for stating that I don't believe in pledging allegiance to flag because it conflicts with my (Christian) religious beliefs.
