My husband and I have been having unprotected sex for 10 months, and nothing yet! What are our chances of EVER having a baby?

Here's some statistics --
85% of couples will conceive within 12 months of unprotected sex.
Another 5-10% will conceive in the second year, without assistance.

"Infertility" is generally defined as failure to conceive within one year.
However the term "infertility" is really being replaced with the term "decreased fertility" because most couples who are "infertile" are NOT really, they just need some help.

So you are coming to the end of the time when it's considered "normal."

There are many causes to decreased fertility, and most of them can be managed these day. Most couples are eventually able to have a baby. Don't despair.

There are several questions I would have, like --
Are your periods regular?
Do you have signs of ovulation?
Have you tried a ovulation predictor kit?
Are you timing it right?
Do either of you have any kids?

(Because there's a difference between just not using anything and really, really trying.) There's lots of little "tricks" people have tried. (email me if you want suggestions)
It's possible that you just haven't hit it at the right time.

I would make an appointment with an OB/Gyn. By the time you get in, your year will probably be just about up.
When you go, bring a menstrual record, AND a record of when you've had sex -- embarrassing, I know, but get used to it, because it will get worse!
The more infromation you can give, the better -- it will save some steps if you've been keeping track of all this already.

Many times, decreased fertility is something very simple to fix, like just not ovulating regularily.

Good luck! I hope this time next year you are a mom, or almost!

Edit -- I didn't really answer your question. Your chances of having a baby are excellent!!!

You should definitely see a doctor about this. 85% of people who are trying to conceive DO conceive within a year. You still have 2 more months for that statistic! And after that, you can see you r doctor...maybe your timing is just off, or there is some little lifestyle change you coudl make. I know a woman who only ovulates from one ovary, so she only has 6 chances to get pregnant a year, rather than 12. Or there could be an issue with your husbands sperm count. Either way, you should still be able to have a baby, through artificial insemination or IVF if nothing else. Good luck! And enjoy your babymaking!

Fertility is a really tricky thing -- some people go for years without having a child and then suddenly, BOOM, kids galore. Others "catch" on the first try.

First, you should see your gyno and have a basic check-up to rule out all the unusual things. It might be a good idea for your husband to go to a doctor, too. If you both have a clean bill of health, you can relax.

Second, you need to consider your age. If you are in your 20s, you still have time to experiment. If you are in your 30s, you might want to experiment more scientifically -- have sex at your predicted ovulation times, eat healthy foods, stay out of hot tubs, wear loose red underwear, that kind of thing. If you are in your 40s, you may not want to fool around -- fertility experts might be the way to go.

Good luck, and try not to worry until someone says, "you better start worrying." Relaxation also seems to play a role in fertility.

well u could just be having it at the wrong times u can go to webmd.com and there is an ovulation predictor that will tell u when u should be ovulating so u can try to have sex during that peroid of time
otherwise my gyno suggests sex every other day for a few months to see if u get preg
if u dont then just go see ur ob/gyn and they will have some other options for u
dont jump to conclusions
it may not be u-

Princess.. 12 months of trying with no success would mean you need intervention (and I don't mean of the Divine kind). See you doctor and ask for blood tests on day 3 and 21 of your cycle (FSH, LH and progesterone). The results will show if your ovulating and also your ovarian reserve. Also consider that your husband may need semen analysis. Clomid may be the first med offered to you, it's relatively cheap with a good success rate. The very best of luck to the two of you.

Are you trying during high fertility - when you are ovulating? Get an ovulation predictor kit to find your peak days. Or consult a doctor so you both can get a work-up and see if there are fertility issues.
