What type of movies are better? The old ones, either really old, like Casablanca, The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mockingbird, or old, but leaning toward contemporary, like movies made in the 70s, 80s to 90s, or the new, really contemporary ones, such as..oh, transformers, pirates 3, spiderman 3?

And also, as a secondary related question, up to what year would movies be considered 'contemporary?'

Contemporary itself means of the same time. So, I guess if you say contemporary movies like Spiderman 3 it would mean today, but if you say contemporary movies of the 70s, you would be comparing movies of the same time period.
Anyways, which ones are better is really a personal choice.

Old old movies like Casablanca seem to "survive" time with great stories, great filming, great acting. It seems the requirements were different at the time. At least in my opinion it seemed that sex was not the one thing taking over the movie. Nowadays there always seems to be necessary to have at least one sex scene or a naked woman! (except maybe spiderman 3? and transformers!)

70s, 80s movies related to Science fiction type were testing with the different techniques so of course by now with the computer generated movies, there is no comparison, the movies of that time will look "old" today. It seemed movie makers did not need as much embellishment to the movie to make it great (Papillon).

Nowadays, there is a lot more happening, a lot more action, a lot more shown violence (Saw) , a lot more info is thrown at ppl. sometimes it may be exciting and brings a thrill, but then how much of the movie really got to you, how good was the story line? How did you relate? We tend toward the imaginative (The Fountain) and this can be a great thing to let your mind fly to anywhere.

I love movies from different time periods. Sometimes I want the old style movie, and other times I want the ones which seemed completely unrealistic.

I like both old movies (Arsenic & Old Lace with Cary Grant is my all time favorite movie and contemporary ones as well. But, if I had to choose, I'd say old movies. No sex or gore (just innuendo) and you can feel comfortable watching them with your relatives.
