It's to absorb fluids & odor from our smelliest parts.
We can change & wash underwear but re-use outerwear.

1. Comfort: underwear material is much softer than many fabrics used in trousers, particularly at the crotch seam. Chafing in a sensitive area is unpleasant.
2. Appearance: if your trousers, dress or skirt is damaged you may prefer not to reveal your genitalia.
3. Function: spotting after urination, seepage due to incontinence and staining from diarrhea and gastric illness will be much less apparent if one wears underwear.

Picture a female with no underwear ever...then visualize that same female with no underwear EVER during that time of the month! Gross-
Dude, for hygiene purposes alone it is necessary that we wear the panties, thongs, G's, boy shorts, briefs, boxers, or whatever your underwear cocktail of choice is...for you guys I am sure you'd rather have Hershey shrieks in your BVD's than your Gap Khaki's!

It's not. Frankly going commando is much more comfortable. But socially I think it is best to go out in underwear in case of an accident. And make sure they are clean.

I think because it keeps our outer clothes cleaner. Nowadays, you wash your clothes after one wear, but back in the day, I think they wore their clothes for several days at a time and underwear kept their clothes a bit fresher. They didn't bathe every day like we do now either. Gag.
With that in mind - I hope they washed their underwear every day!

Because when and if your fly is accidentally open, your thingy won't be hanging out... Try being a teacher and not wearing underwear....

Well, for girls, underwear can lift and shape the butt, also it's kind of hard to put panty-liners on a pair of pants.

So you can wear your pants again the next day without washing them!
Also its an emergency net landing for women.......if you know what I mean.......
And for men......it keeps there boys in control so they don't hang till their knees one day!
And - its just kinda sexy to wear a g-string before taking it all off don't ya think?
