All are born and live the first few weeks in saltwater (the exception here is the Ecuadoran land crabs, since Ecuador has no boundaries with the ocean - they live in fresh water instead). The terrestrial crabs climb up onto the beach and live mostly on land after that, although they may still need to soak in water to keep their gills moist. Marine hermit crabs stay in the water their entire lives.

Actually of all of the Land crabs you find in the US, ecuadorians and strawberries (Perlatus) need salt water the most (in addition to fresh water). They are fundamentally different however. A Land hermit crab, when submerged will eventually drown. How long it takes for that to happen depends on the conditions and the species. A marine crab will die if out of the water too long. (which is quite the opposite).

the difference is that a land hermit crab prefers to live on land (doesn't mean they always they sometimes only live in shallow waters [tide pools]) and a sea hermit crab prefers to live in the sea
