I broke a bone in my hand (boxer's fracture) and got a temporary cast put on in the ER to stabilize it...this was 4 days ago...it's a big oversized cast that covers half of my arm around and runs down to my elbow, with an ace bandage type wrap around it.

It's really itchy and annoying and I was just thinking, I'm seeing a hand specialist in the morning tomorrow, he'll probably take it off anyway to xray it and examine it, maybe I could just take it off tonight and wrap my fingers up so I can get some sleep? I don't know if the specialist would be angry or not, but I figured maybe he'd be happy because I will have taken it off for him and washed it so it doesn't smell or feel sticky or anything.

What do you think?

Yo yo, let me repeat, it's a temp cast put on in the ER, she said the specialist will most likely remove it to put a smaller splint on it. I'm just trying to do both of us a favor, I'm going to see him tomorrow MORNING in less than 10 hours.

Even if the doctor is going to take the temporary splint off, you should wear until you see him. It keeps your fracture in place and immobilized. Wrapping your hand and wrist in an ace wrap won't keep the area immobilized. The splint is there for a reason and it's to help keep it braced/immobilized until you do see a doc. Yes, I know it's itchy, but if you can rough it out a little longer - it'll be fine. It's for your good. Hope this helps!

Don't take it off. Let me put it to you this way. You go into an orthopedic clinic not having your splint on and the doc is gonna think that u just might not follow simple instructions. So what happens is, instead of a short arm cast, you get a long arm cast that will go to your deltoid. It's like impossible to do anything with it if u do get it, so I'd behave for one more day.

It would be really STUPID to take the cast off unless you want the arm not to heal correctly. Itching is normal. And you will not stink if you don't wash it. All that dead skin will come off when the cast should be removed.

If you are having problems, go see the doctor and ask for help. You are not the first person with such concerns.

yes the hand specialist will not be happy
that cast while cumbersome is holding the bones in the correct alignment if they were to shift when u take off the cast the hand specialist might have to take u to surgery to re-break it to get it to set back into the correct position

Dont take the cast off! Especially if your asleep. You could roll over on your arm and move the bones! They you will have to endure surgury!

A doctor would not get mad however disappointed, yes. Your leg might not heal correctly and you will be susceptible to another injury.
