How to care for your new hermit crab The habitat
If you are getting a new hermit crab, first things first, you have to get a habitat for it. A glass 1o gallon terrarium for every five crabs is the best choice because it locks in the humitdy that crabs crave. Don’t be any bit amazed by those cheap plastic crab cages. Save those for when your on the go with your crab or a temporary home for one of your crabs who has just molted and needs to be away from other crabs while vonerable. In your cage, you should have sand, or gravel, food and water bowls (a good thing to have in all water dishes is a natural sea sponge), a place for your crabies to hide, a couple things to climb on such as cholla wood and coral(yo, meters to tell the tepurture and the humidy level and a heat lamp or mat. if your house is lower then between 70 and 80 degrees.
New clothes! yay
Unlike snails, a hermit crabs shell doesen’t exactly grow with a crab. As a crab grows bigger it will soon leave behind his shell and go find a bigger one. It is very importent that you provide shells in a viriety of sizes for your crab to change into. It wont be long before a naked hermit crab searching for a home dries out or gets fatally injured. Sometimes it’s good to buy more then one of each shell size because like humans, crabs can get a picky side and change in to new shells, to see which one matches there sense of “fashion.”
Food
Hermit crabs will eat pretty much anything. In the wild they eat plant matter and dead and dying animals. In captivity you should buy them some fortified crab food. The food usally comes in pellet form or in a powder.Pelleted foods have to be crused into meal so that its easier for the little guys to grasp and larger ones have no trouble with it as well, but don’t just give your crab the same old things. Treat your speical little dudes to some cooked meat with no spices or sauce or some fruits and veggies. Or if a member of your pill bug collection dies, give it to your crabs. Pet shops also sell dried krill and hermies like that as well.
Bathtime
Every week you should give your crabs a bath in luke warm salt water. You can buy sea salt to put into the water at your local pet shop.(NO TABLE SALT). Make sure that the bath is no longer then three minutes. Soon enough hermit crab’s gills give out and they will drown. Keep in mind they arn’t water crabs.

You can keep them in a fish tank and buy them crab food and put the water on a sponge that you buy in a pet store. Make sure you buy shells so that they can change shells with they get bigger. They are very east to take care of.
