I have lived in Florida for 8 years now and have never been to Key West. My husband and I are considering taking a weekend trip for my birthday at the end of July, but everyone I talk to here in Florida says that its dirty, old/run down with homeless and beggers everywhere. We are planning on staying at a really nice hotel that I found called the Hyatt Marina Reosrt. We are not big partiers, but enjoy watching the sunset and having a few drinks in the hotel lounge, etc. However, I want to feel safe walking around the town and from what I've heard, I dont know if that will be the case. I know this is the off season for a lot of tourists and cruise ships, but I just want to make sure that its not only going to be filled with wackos everywhere. So, is Key West really as scary as some people make it seem?

I'm from the midwest and I am not a big partier. But, I went to Key West for the first time in 1999, it was amazing to me--and I love it. And we stayed at the Hyatt Marina for my first time down. The town does come alive at night--don't let that scare you. Some people do like to get crazy, bar hop...etc. But there are many of us that just like to stuff during the day--then at night--chill and relax. We moved to South Florida in 2001 and went to Key West and other keys SEVERAL TIMES. We even got married in Key West at the end of July that year. And we had family come down, stay...etc...including my mom and young children. I would say go with the flow. Explore during the day. We rented bikes one day and had a lot of fun. Scooters is another option. There's a bunch of historic spots to go to. And if you want to avoid the "party" atmosphere---then at night, have a nice dinner with a few drinks---and slowly head back to the Hyatt, have cocktails with your hubby on your balcony. We have since moved back to the midwest--but I love it down there--happens to be one of my favorite places to go and I was JUST SAYING TONIGHT that very thing. Some of my favorite restaurants are Kelly's, Mangoes for a nice dinner, romantic. And Blue Heaven is a must for breakfast!! Have fun!!

Key West is beautiful.
Every city has its seedier side.
Stay on the main drag, and in general tourist areas, and you won't have any trouble. Like anywhere else, if you're in a crowd, keep your wits about you, and enjoy yourself.

Lots of dance clubs, tons of restaurants, dozens of stores both upscale and souvenirs.
Don't miss Key West's Hard Rock Cafe'.
Rent a scooter, a bicycle, or a mini-car. Depending on the time of year, use the in-town tram.

By car, the Causeway is a gorgeous trip. Ferries also connect from Miami, Fort Myers, or Naples.

Not at all! Key West is a beautiful, eclectic, charming community of artists from literally all walks of life. I love it there and I go every year at least once. It is probably my favorite place in Florida, its only competition being the rest of the Keys! The most dangerous thing to fea is drunk drivers, be careful crossing th streets and intersections, even if you have the right of way.

I know a few people who go there every year and they have a great time. It definitely is an eclectic place, but I don't think it is any more dangerous then other tourist areas. I would say it isn't a place you would take young children, but I think you'll have a good time.

every town has good and bad parts.... i doubt that Key West could be any worse than other cities/ tourist places in FL but your best bet is to ask a friend with similar taste to yours that have been to Key West how that felt........ everyone has different comfort levels......
