Usually first offenders of a misdemeanor or traffic offense are put on probation. That's a conditional sentence in lieu of going to jail, where a judge places you on an honor system, along with certain rules and regulations you must follow, and you are also required to visit your probation officer. If, during the period of probation, you violate any of these rules, you could still land in jail.
