Doors are attached to the house. Gates are outside of the house.

Gates are usually openings in something like a Fence or hedge while doors are in buildings. The most common exception is baby gates, which are used to block off openings that are usually not blocked such as a archway or the top or bottom of steps. Most gates are enclosed on 3 sides but not at the top. You could say" I opened the gate at the end of the path and walked up to the front door of the house."

A door is usually attached to a house or structure which allows people, pets etc... to pass through and also shows a clear division in between 2 separate areas. A gate could be defined as a "partial door" it serves almost the same function as a door, but can be used to partially obstruct the way in between 2 separate areas: whether it be a garden gate, doggie gate, baby gate etc...

They both suggest an entrance. A door is usually part of a house or building, and leads to the outside, the inside, or to another room. A gate is generally an exterior entrance, in or out from the outside. Examples: Susie wanted her bedroom door shut. And Jane came through the gate because she wanted to pick some flowers in her neighbor's yard.

I always thought a door was inside (or the front door of a house) while a gate was strictly outside

when I think of door, I think of a house entrance or a room entrance.
When I think of gate, I think of a gate going into someone's yard.
