How to save walnuts on the tree from pesky squirrels without killing the squirrels?

The tree is in our home backyard in Sunnyvale, California. We saw squirrels eating the fruit on July 4, 2007.

offer the squirrels a mixture of corn seed or dried corn on the cob away from the trees, and keep making each time further away, the squirrels will leave the walnuts alone.

I got a small electronic device that emits a high-pitched sound to chase off rodents- it works. Humans and pets can't hear a thing. Ultrasonic rodent repellent I think it's called.
