We are undecided whether we are going to stay here in upstate NY or if we are going to move somewhere else entirely. We have three horses (four soon) and we need at least 10 acres. We are average in the money situation, we have debt but we get by.

I want to move somewhere where it is mild in the winter and summer. We will be staying in the eastern US (to stay close to family.) I want to live in a small-ish town, where people are generally friendly.

I was thinking Kentucky, Virigina, or North Carolina. Mild winter are more importent then mild summers.

Any suggestions?

You most likely will want to move south, probably an affordable place with land the horses. The states you named all fit the bill for weather concerns too. You can look up a lot on an area on some real estate sites. That would be the best place to start because you can get other information from the Chamber of Commerce sites in areas too. But beware, often those will make the place sound really wonderful. You need to visit and really do your homework, it will pay off.

Northern Georgia has a lot of rural areas were many people I know own horses. Towns such as Calhoun and Ranger are a one hour drive from Atlanta, but a world away. The towns are small, and the people nice (pretty southern though). The Winters are nothing, but the Summers can get up in the 90's, but its bare able. The area is really cheap, and a lot of land is available. Hope this helps.
