It's actually from pheromones. You give off a certain amount of pheromones when you menstruate and it's nothing you can smell that's obvious. Your body can detect the pheromone smell even if your nose can't. When your body detects the pheromones in other females, it causes your cycle to change. I'm not sure why it happens but it's a "hidden" smell. Women are attracted to male pheromones, usually emitted in sweat (no, not body odor lol) and it's also a subconscious "smell". This is why you are attracted to some men and not attracted to others. Your reproductive system can "smell" which man would be best suited to reproduce with you. I know it sounds funny but it's part of instinct in humans.

It is a neurological issue. It's been a while since my psychology class but I remember it is a proven fact that if females are around each other a lot for I believe it was 2 months or more their cycles will be all be in sync. That is for women you know as well as women you don't. If you work with females I guarantee that their cycles will be on a clock similar to your own. The first time after class we didn't believe it to be true until we females got to talking to each other and their were twenty of us. All of us were experiencing our periods at the same time. It's kooky.
It has something to do with neurons and stuff but as I said it's been about 10 years since my psychology class. There are some pretty interesting things about the human body.

It as an evolutionary holdover from prehistoric times, when it was common for men to take multiple mates and efficient reproduction was essential to the survival of the species. The Women in their brief monthly phase of peak fertility give off some pheromonic signal that drives men wild. If his wives are on different cycles, hubby has a good chance of picking the wrong one when his nose tells him it's time to go into action, thus wasting precious bodily fluids. But if the women are all menstrually synchronized, he CAN'T pick wrong--they're all fertile

If a group of women hang-out together long enough, their periods will gradually synchronize. Don't ask why...I honestly don't know, but there you go.

most current research experiments deal with pheromones as the main cause of menstrual synchrony.
