do they think that they can just do whatever they want and the people will listen without resistence. To impose their will like they know whatès best for the middle east. Like Ronald Reagan said, the people in the middle east have a backwards logic compared to those in the west. I would think that it would just make things worse with more hate and resentment. Isnèt it best to just stay out out middle eastern affairs. Only trade but nothing else. Osama Bin Laden even said thatès why they attacked the U.S, because of the stuff like their doing now. ThoughtsÉ

Osama also said, if they could just leave us alone, we would leave them alone. We just want them to go away.

While I don't agree with crediting Reagan for anything on the middle east, I agree that Bush (or anyone) will be unable to mold an entire group of people to be his vision of democracy.

At this point, even if he had a good idea, it would be dismissed by middle easterners simply because it was his idea

We cannot have success in Iraq because the Iraqi people dont want the same thing as we do. Shiites want to rule Iraq completely. Sunnis want the minority rule and power that they had with Saddam. Kurds ultimately want their own state. The Kurds could ultimately be the biggest problem because it would involve parts of Iraq, Iran, and Turkey. This will not go over well with any of those countries.

The Churchill creation of Iraq from disparate groups of the Ottoman empire was stupid then, and is stupid today. The divisions were just not apparent until we removed the dictator that kept it together with an iron fist.

Most of the world could see that this would end in a mess.
Anybody with any knowledge of 20th century Middle East affairs could have prophesised chaos which is why the Germans and French so wisely stayed out of it.

In all reality the Bush administration's plan isn't what most think it is. The story the American public and the rest of the globe is being told, yes, that is stupid and entirely unrealistic. However, the actual reason the U.S. is there regarding peak oil, oil trade, and the petrodollar, well that is quite logical, and even further practical.

If you are truly interested in the subject I strongly recommend you watch this, it's about 45 minutes.

The more the United States interferes with the internal affairs of any nation, the more likely we are to be attacked in retaliation for such actions. This has been tried throughout history by many powerful countries, and has failed in almost every case, and I believe we are no exception. (9/11 was the result of just such actions, and it was the poor civilian population that suffered, not the politicians that caused this disaster.

Yes I agree with you, something MUST be done, but our approach so far is ineffective and is making things worse.

Can you imagine if some large foreign army force just landed in washington with a plan to alter everything there would be massive outcry and retaliation by all us citizens.

I sometimes wonder if we aren't trying to give them something (democracy) that they really don't understand, relate to, or even want.

Yep, it's you. YOu are stupid to generalize in this way.

Have you not been watching the news these last severalmonths? I mean The News: what's really going on over there as opposed to what the CommyNewsNetwork wants to feed you.

It's obvious you've never served. So, hush up. You know not of which you speak.
