I just moved into my new apartment, & I can't afford to pay the bill in full because they're charging me $150 extra since my service is new. Plus, they're charging me an extra $55 since they had to come out the day I moved to turn my service on. & if I didn't get it turned on that day, I would've been without electricity for 4 days, & I need electricity especially the lights to study since I'm a college student. So I have to pay 150 + 55 + the actual bill. That's about $250 that I don't have. & I only get SSI & Social Security, so I'm poor.

Call them and try to set up a payment plan. Usually they don't shut off your service after missing one payment. If your only source of income is SSI and Social Security you are probably eligible for assistance with your utility bills. Contact 311 in your area (number for information) and see which services may be available to you. I'm not sure if you have LIHEAP or CEDA in your area but those are companies that help people who are having trouble paying their bills. Do searches on your computer for energy assistance and then do a separate one for CEDA.

If you can, go down to the power company and pay the actual bill part. See about putting the extra on a payment plan. Tell them your income level and see if there are any assistance type programs.

If there is any assistance available, then do not feel bad about using them. That is what they are there for. Don't feel bad about the power company either - they charge HIGH for their electricity.

Call the company and explain your situation. Tell them that you are going to pay something every month. As long as you talk to them and pay something in good faith each month until the balance is paid off, they will not shut off your service.
