I have some crusty white build-up on and around my filter, and on the lid. I have scrubbed with a pad and a sponge, but to no avail. I am afraid to use soap because I know that will kill my fish, but I am running out of options. Someone please help me

For things like the hood and filter that you can remove from the tank to clean, use some vinegar to help break up the residue. Soak a paper towel in some and allow it to set on the build up for a few minutes, then scrub, it will come off much easier and much more completely.

DO NOT use a sponge for this. They containe chemicals that may contaminate the water. You can buy aquarium safe scrubbing pads for this.

Scrubbing is the only way I have ever done it. If you aren't getting it off, then you aren't scrubbing hard enough. Try those green abrasive pads. Don't use soap unless you rinse really well.

I've always used an old (thoroughly cleaned) toothbrush, and chipped away at crusty spots with the back of it...

it's calcium. it's just going to keep coming back so you may as well get used to it. but if you remove it from the tank to scrub you can put some vinegar on the scrubby and it will come off. just rinse then and put it back.
