If so, do you think it would be a good movie to show to a friend who hasn't seen any anime before?

It's not a bad choice, but it depends a bit on your friend's tastes. Howl's behavior isn't really explained all that well, and it's a bit hard to follow at times.

Spirited Away is a good flick, but has a lot of Japanese culture references that your friend may not get. If you think your friend will find the cultural references interesting, that might be a good choice.

Otherwise, I'd think about your friend's desire for action in movies. If they like a lot of action, try Castle of Cagliostro instead. For an intermediate amount, try Laputa, Castle in the Sky. Or if a pretty quiet movie is more to their liking, try Kiki's Delivery Service.

Howl's Moving Castle is based on a (somewhat?) famous book by a British author. I think that makes it a good choice to show to someone who's new to the anime world as it doesn't have so many references in the Japanese culture that might confuse someone unfamiliar with those things.
Of course, you should take into consideration your friend's tastes in books/movies/comics etc and chose an anime that is closer to his/her general preferences.
Miyazaki's films are good for 'newbies' I think but then again, I know people who find them boring too...^^;
Maybe the best choice would be to ask what kind of gebre the person would like to watch?...

Howl's Moving Castle is a great movie but i think its not much of a great great great movie to show a Friend that never watched anime before because even though it is awesomely great, its not going to make ur Friend 100% pursuaded to watch anime i would rather let them watch naruto? or inuyash since they are the most popular anime around and people love then at first site. But ya know its my oppinon as a anime lover ^.^

I have seen Howl's Moving Castle and absolutely loved it. I think that or any Myasaki film is a great way to introduce someone to anime.

yes, i've seen the movie... but personally i think the storyplot is a bit complicated for a person who hasnt seen any anime before...me myself had some difficult time understanding Howl's Moving Castle... if your friend is a girl, then maybe you should show her Spirited Away or Laputa: Castle in the Sky instead...
