Well, don't you hope you can get on the history book writer's good side? It's all what they WANT you to believe/remember...TRUTH has little to do with it.

As you obviously already noticed, saying that Columbus "discovered" the Americas isn't exactly the best word to use. People usually say that he discovered the Americas when they really mean that he was the first European to explore there. But then, that isn't really correct, as there were other Europeans who sailed to the Americas before Columbus's time (e.g. - some historians think that Vikings traveled to North America; Amerigo Vespuci [if I spelled that right] also sailed to North America and it's from him that we get the word "America"). So I suppose you could say that Columbus was the first commissioned explorer (he was paid by King Ferdinand & Queen Isabella of Spain) to successfully travel to the Americas during the Age of Exploration and to alert mainstream modern Europe of his discoveries.

He didn't "discover" America. People continually use that term to describe Columbus's finding of the largely unknown America, to which he introduced to Europe. In Europe, people had no idea that America existed so I believe that when they refer to Columbus's findings it is deemed a "discovery."

WOW! that's a great question. he wasn't the FIRST to discover america. He might (hey who knows?) be the the first HUMAN EUROPEAN to do that i guess (unless those early humans that lived in europe moved to america and settled there. that means they would later become the native americans)

History is always warped. People like to put their own spin on it and say it's true.

thats exactly what i said. the europeans felt they could claim anything as their own due to their power and status. thats why we need to reform history education in schools.
