Well the best thing I have done is to save someones life ,a few years ago. I was in the merchant Navy and was asleep in my cabin aboard a ship. I heard shouting. Went up on to deck but saw nothing, went back to bed. Then heard it again. Went out again. Looked all around and then heard a noice looked overboard and there was someone in the water (the Thames) I then got a mooring line with and threw it to him and told him to climb into the eye of the rope. I then tried to pull him up on my own and although I was physiclly fit I could not. I tied the line off to the side of the ship and told him to wait and went to get help. I went to get the 1st mate who was startled to see me it being 2 or 3 in the morning. After telling him the situation he hastely came out on to the deck in his y fronts. We both pulled him aboard.. It turns out he was one of the crew a 70 year old scot who was chief engineer . He had gone ashore and had a few too many and had fallen off the boarding ladder. We gave him soup a warm shower. He was on the verge of hypothermia and the current in the Thames is very strong (he was holding on to the peir in what was a 7-8 meter between ebb and flood tide) All that in consideration given his age as well as the hour he wasnt going to live long. SO really if I hadnt of woke then he would almost certanly not of made it. In the morning he was somewhat subdued but I will always remember the look and the thanks he gave me with teary eyes.

Held someone close, stayed with her, when she was trying her darndest to die. She was going wild doing all sorts of craziness she should have known better than to do, and something about me kept her from going completely insane, just for a while. Or so she said.
I hear she's pursuing an engineering degree and in a longterm stable relationship now. Think I did right, even if some would say it was not.

Saw man hitting his wife in a parking lot while the small 2 yr old cried. The woman could not get away from the man. I stepped in and tried to talk to the man. The man was really angry, even at me. He finally just got in his car and drove off leaving his wife & child stranded. I helped her by taking her to my house for a few days. Then helped her move out of her husband's abusive home. I think when you help someone, it needs to be unconditional and never expect something in return. I often wonder what ever happened to the woman and the small child. I just hope they're safe wherever they are.

I saw a young mom with two little kids at the grocery store run into a display with her cart and knock over hundreds of chili packets. I stopped and helped her clean up. She was so embarrassed and almost crying and I tried to cheer her up. She kept thanking me when I'd run into her around the store, then I heard her tell her child, "See, if you ever see someone who needs help, you be like that nice lady and stop and help".

took them in for 6 months, then found a place for them, paid two months rent and utilities, spent money on food, kids supplies and toys, furniture, and most other needs and a few wants....the lame husband ended up getting fired for not showing up for the job we got for him, they got kicked out of the home i got them into, and with 5 kids already 8 and under, she was pregnant again....we had to just turn away after so long. no matter what we did to help, it was never enough....some people just cant be helped if they never get the initiative to do better for themselves and their family...broke my heart...
