Okay, weird. This situation just happened minutes ago, twice with two different people. Wanted to get on the net and was not interested in hearing about schoolwork problems (friend of mine) until my ears were bleeding (it just kept going on and on!)
But had to sit and listen, and the bored part of me was getting p.o'd at the polite side of me asking more in depth questions and giving advice to try to ease her anxiety.
It was like my psyche was diverging between nice and selfish. Luckily my nice side won out and she was relieved and we said good night. Then suddenly another situation occurred and I went through the whole process again with someone else. Only this time, it was just real babbling, but I could see that the person was just busting to talk.
Enough babbling from me. Thanks for listening!
Peace

Well if it is someone I am really close to, I will tell them to get to the point. But I will usually just act like I'm listening and say something like "really? oh. that sucks.." And try to think of random yes/no questions so that it will look like I am paying attention.

I listen. If I have something else to do, I start to do it though.
My husband and I are on a different level than others with that question though. With him, I've not always been kind enough to listen.

I listen. What the person is saying might be boring to you, but very important to them. So I am polite and I am patient and I listen, not showing my boredom.

I will usually listen. We all need to vent once in a while. If it goes on too long or too often, then I will put a stop to it.

I would pretend to be interested in what they're saying just not to hurt their feelings.
