In reality their enormous gravity pulls objects deadly to earth towards them....you could say they are our gaudian angels...because without them we wouldn't have life on earth

It would be the result of human language, and thinking, to try and give them a purpose, but according to chaos theory, which is a mathematical theory, the other planets, like Earth, are just where the material that didn't make up the sun ended up because the physics said they must.. The orbits of the other planets are located where they are because that is what the laws of our universe dictate.
Their human purpose may be to cause us to wonder whether we are the only living things inhabiting this universe of ours, but that is purely the creation of meaning which is created by the symbols we use which we call language.
Remember that because we are the users of language, we are also the creators of meaning. Purpose pertains to our lives, not the stars and planets.
Other than that I cannot see them needing a purpose to exist.

their purpose is to exist, apparently - maybe to look cool? I don't know. most other planets have no direct effects on human life. a universe designed for human life would be far smaller than the universe that actually exists - there is no apparent purpose for most of it. someone above said it best: 'purpose' is a religious concept. we can reasonably enquire about the structure, dynamics, formation processes, etc of the planets but questions about their purpose lead nowhere.

people who say that the purpose of planets such as jupiter is to deflect debris from the earth need to answer another question: what's the purpose of the debris? why is there anything in the universe other than the sun, earth and moon?

None. There's no purpose to anything except what people or animals assign. There are no gods. The universe wasn't designed. And there's no purpose to Earth. From the point of view of most other living things on this planet, humans are just a pain in the ***. The only other species I can think of which have benefited from our existence are rats and mice.

Planets, as termed in the question, do not have a "purpose" in the same manner that the sun, the satellites the comets, or even any physical body, has a specific purpose,,,,they are just matter in this dimension,,,,(tridimensional world)......

To imply that planets have a purpose suggests that they were created by an intelligence.... I find that extremely unlikely to be the case.

There is no purpose for the other planets or for any other thing. Purpose is a relgious concept.

We are not alone.

How arrogant a society to believe we are the most intelligent life forms in the Universe. Somewhere, some aliens are laughing their a'sses off at our ignorance.

They don't have a purpose, they are just there.

there doesn't have to be a purpose for the other planets.and if man destroys Earth, there doesn't have to be a purpose to this one either.
