i have a desktop w/ xp nd a new notebook w/ vista nd im tryin to connect my desktop to the laptop to transfer files to the laptop...

This scenerio should work. Just make sure that both computers have the same workgroup name. Vista has changed the default workgroup name. just search the help file and it will give you a step by step instruction to change the workgroup name. On the folder that you want to share with the other computer right click and select sharing and security. Set up the share. When this is completed you should be able to go through My network places and on the sidepanel select view workgroup computers. You should be able to then see the other computer.

you'd find it easier to connect them using a wireless router and a patch cable. connect the pc to the router via cable and laptop to router via wireless.
