The real question is why has the Democratic party been hijacked by the fringe left and turned it's back on the working class and the family. The fringe left has a singular goal which is dictating how one should live their life and they hide behind calling the average american who wants to live their life as they see fit (freedom of the individual) as a neofacists. The US is under attack by the far-right (Islamic fundamentalism) and the far left (the Pelosi-Clinton-Moveon coalition) with both posing serious challenges the freedoms set for by the constitution.

The majority of neo-fascist Bush supporters are white American males who want to vicariously revel in what our courageous sons and daughters in the military are doing.
It makes little difference to them that we were lied into a war in Iraq that never needed to be fought. It makes little difference to them that 3500 of our brave sons and daughters have so far been killed in a war that never needed to be fought. It makes little difference to them that a third of the 20,000 plus of our sons and daughters wounded in Iraq have wounds so severe that they will never live even the semblance of a normal life.
As a vet who has been there, done that and bought the T-shirt, I know that optional wars are BS. I wish that every chickensh*t...I mean chickenhawk...who supports this bloody circle jerk in Iraq would put their money where their filthy mouths are and enlist.
