To be honest depending on the wood it can take months to stop completely however, using carbon in the filter will remove the majority of the discoloration.

You needed to prepare your drift wood prior to putting it in the tank. Soaking it in hot water for a few hours then cold for a few more would have helped to release the tannins so you would not have this problem. It won't stop leaching for a numberof months to come. You didnot let it sit long enough in hot water. Adding salt to the water will help it leach faster when boiling it. Also Drift woods LOWER the PH not increase it. Either your testing kit is off or you have something else in the tank that is increasing your ph like sea shells or calcium. I would suggest you get your results tested against the results from a store.

I have a 25lb piece of driftwood that has been putting off tannins for over 6 months. It all depends on the individual piece. Tannins won't hurt anything, and may even make your water more hospitable, depending on the species.

Put the log in water for a day. Change the water every day. When the water is clear and not tea colored, you can put it into your tank. Activated carbon will also remove some of the color.

2-3 weeks is common. I never recommend boiling anything. It will mostly just soften the wood.
If you buy "activated carbon" available in most pet stores you can add some of that too the water and that will speed it up a little bit.

Scrub off all loose wood, even sandpaper it.
Soak in a pail first.
Change water everyday.
May consider boil for 20mins to kill off any harmful bactical hiden within the drift.
My 6kg log take 4days.

put it in hot -- not quite boiling water -- like you are making tea. do this a few times. it helps -- there will still be a little brown left but not as bad as it was.
