Probably because when it's released on DVD with lots of extras, they'll call it Die Hard 4.1, then when it's re-released with more added cuts it'll be Die Hard 4.2...etc...etc.
They did it for the X-Men and Spiderman 2 DVD releases, much to the annoyance of the real fans who bought it as soon as it was released! Grr...

And yes - the film IS called Die Hard 4.0 outside of North America. They probably changed this because the rest of the world wouldn't get the "Live free or Die" reference, and because of the "virtual terrorists" that he is trying to stop ;););)
