There are several factors in the greatness of America, and every proud citizen should know them and practice them to keep our nation great.
The first is the spirit of independence. It inspires us to want to own our own homes, to be entrepeneurs, to guide and mold our children and to protect our families.
The second is the willingness to accept people who want to be Americans as Americans. Those of us whose ancestors came from Ireland, Italy, Germany, Poland, China, Japan, India, Korea, Mexico, Vietnam and other places know what it means to be allowed to stand up tall and proud and declare "I am an American."
The third is the common desire to better ourselves. To leave this country and this world in better shape than we found it. I'm not sure my generation will be able to claim to have done that. But we need to try.
And finally I think what makes us great is the idea of what America truly stands for. Individual freedom, toughness, justice, generosity, charity, unity and many other things.
In other countries people struggle to survive and fend for themselves. They fear strangers. Before my German family came to America they lived in Russia nearly 100 years. They left to avoid being indiscriminately killed.
In America they prospered. That's why America is so great. We can all prosper. In other countries we are doing good to survive.

Because our nation puts the most emphasis on individual liberties and freedoms, that no other country has! We value the individual over the common good of the people, like socialist countries do! These freedoms allow you to reach your full potential and dreams, since you aren't taxed to death to pay for an unending amount of socialist programs, allowing you to invest your money or open a business. Whatever you choose! Plus you have full rights to own property or a business, since those things are usually owned by the state in socialist countries!

Thank You! I am so glad to see that people appreciate this country. I have been reading around on the internet and especially on Yahoo Answers, there has been a lot of people who say America's government is a joke, America is a joke, George Bush is retarted, etc. How can you say America's govenment is a joke? We have stayed together through the worst times (ex. Hurricane Katrina, 9/11) and have resisted other countries' attacks to try to overrun this country. If you truly think America is a joke, then you should go to some other countries on Earth because you could be killed for saying you don't like it there (Ex Iraq, Iran, Russia) I cannot name any other country in the world that has the most opportunity to become successful. If you truly think America is a joke I think you are a spoiled piece of crap. Happy Independence Day!

There has never been a nation of 300 million people of such diverse ethnic backgrounds that have enjoyed as much prosperity as we have in the United States of America today.
There are smaller countries with far lower percentages of minorities that enjoy better standards of living, but their inability to integrate large numbers of racial and ethnic minorities does not make them better destinations for immigrants looking for a better life. As a rough indicator of relative economic prosperity, just list the number of countries that can afford to retire aircraft carriers for use as floating museums, or that actually have any aircraft carriers at all.
The main reason for this prosperity is that we have an economy that is characterized by freedom of choice, freedom to innovate and freedom to invest, tempered by a rising environmental consciousness and a generosity for those less fortunate than ourselves. Very few countries have ever been so accepting of so many of the children of their enemies as the United States of America.

I have travelled all over, Australia, Pacific Islands, New Zealand, China, India, Canada, USA, Europe, Malaysia, and OK, well I've never been to Russia.
What I will say about the USA, is it is one of the strangest places I have been, but one of the most beautiful ones too. You don't give your natural scenery much advertisements.
But also, it was a place I definitely would not like to live.
just a personal opinion, much like your own

We are great because of the founding principals of this country and the people in this country are not dumb, we will take some crap for a little while and then we will clean house and that day is getting closer. So if you hear a little griping its not hate of this country, its good loyal citizens wanting to clean up the mess we have.

I have traveled as well and agree that the US is the greatest place on Earth. You don't have to take my word for it, just look around and see that everyday people die trying to get here, that says it all
