I've read that sugar substitues are considered safe in very small amounts (like one diet soda per day). I don't always trust things like that, so I think I've had things with sugar subs only a few times throughout my pregnancy. I would just limit my intake and maybe see what your doc has to say about it.

My gyn/ob said Splenda was fine. Another doctor said no more than 2 servings per day of Splenda. Some use it constantly and others not at all.
My take on this is since I only use it in my coffee, and am only having 2 cups a day when pregnant, I'll use it in my coffee. Since I am at risk for GD, I would plan to simply eliminate sweets and most breads (bread is my problem food anyway) and cereals down to minimal servings. That would keep my blood sugar down better than switching from sugar to Splenda.

There is no data as to whether sugar substitutes are absolutely safe. I would be hard pressed to give it up for my coffee, but would likely switch to honey. This is not to imply honey is better than table sugar, necessarily, but many diabetics report that they don't get blood sugar spikes from honey. It is likely absorbed more slowly.
If you did have something with Splenda, don't freak. The fact is, it hasn't been shown to be bad either, so occasional shouldn't be a problem.

I had gestational diabetes, so my Dr. and nutritionist said one serving of splenda 1-2 times a day was okay.
My son was fine.

I have gestational diabetes, so I use Splenda for everything: coffee, tea, cinnamon whole wheat toast, etc. Even before I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, my OB said Splenda was fine, and after I was diagnoised, the nutritionist that she referred me to ordered me to stop using sugar and only use Splenda.
If you have any concerns, ask your OB, but my experience has been that it's fine.

I was told that because splenda is made from sugar, but is missing only one molecule that it is "preferred" over other artificial sweeteners. It is debatable whether or not aspartame is safe or not (it is approved by the FDA though), but saccharine has been proven unsafe and can cause birth defects.

When I was pregnant everything I used had splenda in it. Kool aid, cookies, pies, cakes, even ate a teaspoon of it to get a bad taste outta my mouth.
I have a happy and healthy three year old and I have no medical problems whatsoever.
