Because every Tom, Dick and Harry would be messing with our minds with nothing holding them accountable for what they do to a person who is in need of phychological counseling.

Often people seek a psychologist when he/she is unable to thnk clearly and make good decisions- it would be sad to let some lunitic set up shop and take advantage of those in need.

Would you want a non licensed nurse or doctor caring for you when you are in need of urgent care and without time to shop around? Licensing should not be used as a source of revenue for each state, but it is good to make professionals accountable to act as a reasonable person in that profession.

Well, you could ask the same question about medical doctors. Why license them? You would think twice about having an unlicensed surgeon operate on you, because you don;t want just anyone messing with your health. The same goes for your mental health. Since you pay for this expensive service (psychotherapy), you want to know you are getting value for money, from someone who is trained. Licensing councils also ensure that practitioners uphold a certain standard of practice and ethical standard.

People in need of psychologists are generally rather fragile-- an untrained or "bad" psychologist can do lasting damage.
Certification is very important, unlicensed psychologists are as dangerous as unlicensed doctors.

"sporkk" is completely right...

AND they (like ALL other doctors) charge you a small fortune - and don't offer any sort of "refund" policy ;););)
