1st off Ryan definatly does not deserve to top this list, or any pitching list. he has one of the worst winning percentages and even though he has high totals as far as SO and Wins keep in mind he played for 25+ years, which gives one time to rack up a lot of stats.
1-Maddux
2-The Rocket
3-The Big Unit
4- Tommy G Glavine
5-Smoltz
The sad part is look at 3 Braves pitchers and only 1 ring. and im a mets fan

4 John Smoltz
5 Randy Johnson
I give Maddog the edge over Rocket because he started 26 more games during the decade, won 24 more, lost one less and had a lower ERA. He also had 17 more complete games, and pitched more innings per start than Rocket. Greg also gave up fewer runs, earned runs, home runs, hit fewer batters and of course, walked fewer batters despite pitching over 200 more innings.
Pedro's career didn't really start until 1993 and Curt Shilling missed too many starts to really contend.
Fireman of the decade goes to John Wetteland. He had more saves (295) and a lower ERA than all other contenders.

Nolan Ryan? Replace the name Ryan (who was a great pitcher in the 70's and OK in the 80's) with Pedro Martinez and your list is better.

One can reverse these two rankings (for the 1990s) without much dispute, but I like them this way.
3. Johnson
4. Martinez
5. Glavine
Ryan really doesn't factor in; for the decade he only pitched 1990-93, reasonably well the first two (including, yes sportsfans, his last two no-hitters), league-average the third, and pretty bad the last.
The five I named accounted for 13 of the 20 Cy Young Awards for the decade. The other seven were all one-time winners.
Top reliever was Eckersley, followed by Hoffman.
