Ovulation is when your ovaries are releasing an egg. Without the egg being released, you can't get pregnant. Ovulation is the optimal time to get pregnant.

Hello. Well, actually, what you describe is called, by some, Natural Family Planning! :o) You BECOME pregnant (generally) when you ARE ovulating and NOT when you aren't. That's why married couples who are trying to conceive monitor when the woman IS ovulating! Conversely, those sexually active couples who DON'T want to conceive abstain from sexual intercourse and other sexually risky behaviors when the woman IS ovulating. I can't give you a statistic. There are lots of women who will tell you they became pregnant when they were having their period, which technically 'shouldn't happen!!! The trick here, is to know how LONG your ovulation cycle is; how many days are you fertile. The white or creamy mucus-like discharge you notice about 14 days after the end of your last period is generally a good indication of you ovulating. Another way to determine whether you are ovulating is by taking your temperature every morning before you get out of bed and to chart your temperature. You will notice a change in your temperature during your ovulation cycle. Probably more information than you wanted...

The typical 28 day cycle, idealistically, is like clock work. The first week after your period, your body is still preparing for ovulation and the egg has not yet been released. The second week after your previous period is your week of fertility. Your egg is released and is able to be fertile for approximately 3 days, about the same life expectancy as sperm. This is because an egg and sperm are only half of a complete cell and are not self sustaining. So you are fertile for three days and able to be fertilized for about 6 full days. This time span covers the entire second week after your period. The third week after your period, the egg has died, decomposed, and been reabsorbed back into your body. There is no egg to be fertilized at this time, so there is no chance of pregnancy. The uterine walls begin to break down as your body prepares to flush your reproductive system. The fourth week after your period is another period, and your body has come full circle. The chances for pregnancy during this time, again, is none. So for 3 out of 4 weeks, the chances of pregnancy is slim to none. Catholics use this time line basis for Natural Family Planning, as it is considered interfering with God's will to use protection.
A good way to tell if you're fertile, if you have irregular cycles, is by your vaginal secretions. For the better part of the month when you're not menstruating, your vaginal secretions should be fairly thick and whitish in color. However, when you're ovulating, your body releases more clear and watery secretions. You'll also be secreting more fluids during this time. This is your body's way of preparing you for 'entry' and potential fertalization.

Sperm lasts for up to 3 days in womb so you either have to have sex within the 2-3 days prior to ovulating or when you are ovulating to fall pregnant. In short unless you ovulate you can not become pregnant

Ovulation is the time when you become pregnant. This means that the egg is in position and fertile, ready to be fertilized. If you're not ovulating, your chances of getting pregnant are slim to none.

some women can get pregnant at the drop of a hat, my grandmother had 18 kids while others who can may never get pregnant but considering the average female has about 400 cycles in her reproductive years you can figure the odds from there! if you have sex at the peak of your cycle then the odds are 400 to 1 that you may get pregnant!
